Robert,
The procedure you described for swtiching film formats on the Elmo 912, sounds identical to my "dying" Bolex V180 Duo which I want to replace.
Are you happy with your 912?

Robert, you are correct! Thanks for the response here and the e-mail I never in a million years thought the same sprocket would work for both sized holes, but indeed it does.
However, it seems I was confused. I thought the unit was the Elmo 912, but it is actually the Goko 3003 (same as crimsonson's viewer). I am perfectly happy with it now, though the motor is a bit noisier than the one on my Elmo 912/S.
I guess having the 912/S is what confused me into think I bought a 912. The Elmo 912/S sound-capable editor is my main viewer for Super 8, and I am happy with it. But it is not dual, so I got the Goko in case I ever get around to shooting something with my Bolex H8 camera. (I will, I will -- I promise!)
I used to have a higher end Goko Super 8 editor that would actually record sound. It was quite nice, and I sold it on eBay at a good profit over my purchase price. I consider my Elmo 912/S to be about the same in quality as my former Goko, but it doesn't record sound.
From Robert's description, it sounds like the Goko 3003 and the Elmo 912 (not 912/S) are very similar. The gate on the 3003 also is changed with the turn of a coin.
I just tested out the Goko 3003 a few minutes ago with an old roll of Regular 8 -- probably from the 1950s or 1960s, judging by the automobiles. Works great, though it took me a few minutes to figure out where the graming adjustment is. It's the little knob on the sprocket mechanism. Push in to turn, and that adjusts the framing.

I found this picture of the Goko 3003 editor over at the http://www.monodofoto.com site. The guy has tons of pictures of gear, so look there if you want to see something you've read about but have never laid eyes on.

Thanks for the photos - I have just been informed by a cine specialist that the Elmo 912 and Goko 3003 editors were made by the same company.

Hi Mike
To answer your point concerning the Elmo 912. I have dug out a copy of Film making magazine dated October 1978, where there is a test report. I quote: "The "gate" has to be used for the type of film in use, and this is done by inserting a coin into the slotted screw under the lamphouse and giving it a twist. There is a rather ingenious sprocket to the left of the gate, because the teeth will handle all types of 8mm film. The teeth are small at the front, for Super 8 film, and larger at the rear for Standard [regular] 8. On some editors, the sprocket has to be reversed or changed altogether, and the 912 avoids this inconvenience."
I must say I was confused when I purchased my 912 about a year ago, because it was set up for regular 8 and didn't initially impress me. Fortunately, I remembered I had this magazine article.

Speaking of viewers, I just purchased a Goko dual-8 model from Germein. Looks exactly like a Vernon 808 I used to have. Anyway, it doesn't have the plastic S8 adaptors. Does anyone know where I can purchase these?
